Employee awards are a very positive motivator for anyone. When should these awards be given? Why should the employee be recognized? If an employee is given very concrete goals and works diligently to accomplish these goals then this is time for some form of recognition. Achievements are what you should reward. Some of these may be very minute and are hardly noticed. And some may be very large and very noticeable. However small or large all should be appreciated in some way. When your employee is motivated he works hard and smart. This is a very profitable combination for you and your business. It is also very positive in that other employees have an example that working hard and smart is a positive act and will lead to being recognized. Boosting morale by recognition is very positive however you must maintain that positive level of morale. If you give awards only when morale is low then in the long run it will not benefit your business as the employees will not really feel that they are being recognized but only used as a tool. If you provide meaningful recognition that is consistent then this will have a positive impact on the staff. Employee of the month awards are an excellent consistent approach. To consistently provide positive feedback the employees must be given specific goals to be accomplished with a specific period of time. In this case all employees would participate and be eligible to be the employee of the month. A written thank you left on the desk telling the employee that it was a job well done might motivate that employee to work harder that day. Perhaps inviting the employee to the office to verbally give them your thanks and that of the company for accomplishing a task. You may want to recognize a success by assigning an important task to that person. Teams should also be recognized for their successes. Your team may have reached an interim goal during a project. Morning coffee with donuts or chocolates for their area would be a way to say thank you. An invitation to a picnic lunch in a park near the office or leaving early one afternoon is certainly a positive reinforcement. These are not expensive forms of awards and the company will benefit greatly. At times when a team finalizes a project successfully it is time for upper management to be involved and present. Complimenting the team and individuals when management is present gives the team a cohesive bond by being recognized together so that the next assignment will even be better. They are all proud to be part of this team. A plaque recognizing these accomplishments could be given and posted near their area. Upper management is now aware of their achievements and will have great expectations from them in their next project. A encouraging reinforcement of how important an employee is can be done by awarding a plaque that the employee can display near his desk. There are many employees who want to have a plaque that shows how special they are so this will motivate them to work hard so they, too, will be recognized. Being recognized and appreciated, whether at home or at work, is what everyone strives for.
