How Your Small Business Can Use Employee Service Awards

Employees who feel beaten down and under-appreciated are far less productive than their happier counterparts. Employee service awards can help you create the type of environment that motivates employees and increases productivity.

The kind of awards you give will probably depend on the size and type of business you run. The bigger the business, the larger incentives and awards they are able to give. 401 Ks, for instance, are a common perk given to employees of large or medium-sized companies. A small, fledgling business may not be able to give awards on that scale, but they can certainly recognize their employees. In fact, it is even more essential for them to do so, as a business in its initial stages can greatly benefit from consistency and employee loyalty.

Awards do not have to be monetary. If your business can afford monetary awards, these are always appreciated. Even a small bonus for good employees at the holidays will go a long way towards improving morale and company-employee relations.

However, if you cannot afford monetary recognition, you can find other ways to recognize your employees.

It might seem as though an "employee of the month" plaque or some other certificate of recognition would not be appreciated or worthwhile. However, even small, token forms of recognition can certainly boost motivation and morale. When these awards are given, your employees know that you are noticing their performance as individuals, rather than seeing them simply as cogs in a huge machine.

A company party can be a great way to recognize everyone at once. In addition, by allowing your employees to socialize in a fun, relaxed environment, a party will will foster camaraderie and may help your employees perform and work together as a team in the future.

It is important to be egalitarian in your efforts to reward employees. Yes, there may be certain types of performance that you value over others, and it is okay to indicate that. However, you should cast a wide net when deciding whom and what to recognize. Make sure that you look in different departments, and attempt to give everyone some sort of recognition at some point. If you only ever reward the same people or the same aspect of performance, you might create contention rather than improving morale.

While employee service awards are a great way to improve morale and to boost motivation, they cannot be your only tool in doing these things. If your work environment is generally hostile and authoritarian, awards will seem hypocritical and your employees will interpret them as being only for show. Service awards should be a part of a management philosophy that values each employee's individual contributions on a daily basis. Service awards can be a wonderful way to do this when they are combined with a pleasant, healthy, upbeat day to day environment.
